Not long ago many of us met people through personal ads in the newspaper or through friends of friends. A short ad gave you a few lines and no photo, so it was hard to show who you really were. An online profile is different: you can write it in your own time, at your own pace, and let people get a real feel for you before you ever say hello.
Even so, plenty of people over 50 find it hard to write about themselves. The good news is that it does not need to be clever or long. A few honest, friendly paragraphs are all it takes.
Start with the basics. Say where you live, where you grew up and whether you have moved around over the years. Mention your family if you like, whether you have grandchildren, and any pets that rule the house.
Talk about what you enjoy. Are you happiest on the golf course, in the garden, on a hiking trail or watching the Springboks with friends? Do you love cooking, travelling, reading or a Sunday braai? Little details and a funny story or two make you far more memorable than a list of adjectives.
Think about what you would enjoy together. If you are stuck, write about the things you would like to do with someone new: a weekend in the Drakensberg, a trip down the Garden Route, a show you would like to see or a restaurant you have been meaning to try. Writing about "we" and "us" helps the reader picture themselves alongside you.
Leave the past where it belongs. It is usually best not to go into previous relationships in your profile. Save that conversation for later, once you have got to know each other. The same goes for strong views on politics.
Add a good photo. A clear, recent photo with a smile makes a huge difference to how many replies you get. Our profile photo tips explain what works best.
Above all, be honest, be positive and be yourself. Ready to give it a go? Join for free and write your profile today.
